Opposition leaders marched to the Election Commission office demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation. The march included Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, among others.
On Tuesday, opposition MPs led by Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra marched towards the Election Commission (EC) headquarters in Delhi. The march was part of a nationwide protest calling for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation over concerns about the functioning of the EC and its handling of the special intensive revision of electoral rolls (SIR).
The march started from the Parliament complex and was stopped by the police approximately half a kilometre away on Parliament Street, before the demonstrators could reach Ashoka Road, where the EC's office is located. After being detained, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were seen inside Akashvani Bhawan, the All India Radio headquarters next to the EC office, in an attempt to reach the EC.
Other opposition leaders including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee, and Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut participated in the march. According to reports, Rahul Gandhi held a placard that said: ‘Gyanesh, it’s done bro!’.
Rahul Gandhi stated that about 300 Opposition MPs wanted to meet Kumar and the election commissioners, but were stopped. He questioned the meaning of democracy if the EC does not meet with the MPs who represent the people.
