Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on September 12, 2026, during the BRICS Summit. The leaders discussed maintaining peace in border areas, addressing structural trade imbalances, and expanding common ground on regional and global issues.

On September 12, 2026, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. Both leaders welcomed the steady progress in India-China relations since their last meeting in Tianjin in August 2025.

Modi and Xi reaffirmed the need for a strategic and long-term perspective for their ties, emphasizing that differences should not lead to disputes. The Indian Prime Minister stressed the importance of mutual respect, sensitivity, and interest as guiding principles.

The leaders focused on maintaining peace and tranquility in the border areas as a crucial factor for the continued development of bilateral relations. They agreed to observe existing agreements and understandings on border-related issues and work towards a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary question.

Both sides took note of the progress in people-to-people ties and underscored the need to further promote cultural exchanges, business linkages, and greater mobility between the two countries. On economic and trade relations, they underlined the need to address each other’s concerns, including structural trade imbalances and supply chain issues, and facilitate meaningful and predictable market access.

The two leaders also agreed that both sides must continue to expand common ground on regional and global issues, and in addressing challenges.
