The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, has highlighted the rapid expansion of India's Metro network. In 2014, the country had only 248 km of Metro lines across five cities, compared to nearly 1,200 km across 26 cities today. This growth indicates that the pace of expansion increased significantly since 2014.
The Prime Minister further noted that over one crore people travel by Metro every day. He explained that this expansion means less time spent in traffic, more time with family, greater productivity and better opportunities. The Prime Minister stated that this transformation is what the Government is working towards for urban India.
When asked about the pace of expansion in 2014, Shri Modi commented that if the network had continued expanding at the same rate, cities like Pune would have to wait years or even decades to receive a metro. However, he stressed that this was unacceptable.
