On August 30, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid floral tributes at the Shastri Memorial in Tashkent, marking the 60th anniversary of the late Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri's passing in 1965. The memorial, named after him, is situated on a street that shares his name. This location serves as a reminder of the fond remembrance of Shastri's life and legacy in Tashkent. Besides the memorial and the street, there exists a local school and an Indian Cultural Centre in Tashkent, both named after Lal Bahadur Shastri. After offering respects at the Shastri Memorial, Prime Minister Modi visited the Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies. Upon arrival, he was received by the Prime Minister of Uzbekistan and the rector. During his visit, he interacted with Indologists and scholars pursuing academic interests at the Mahatma Gandhi Centre of the university. The university has an impressive record of teaching Hindi language and other Indian subjects for 80 years. In recognition of this close cultural affinity between the two countries, Prime Minister Modi announced the Lal Bahadur Shastri Scholarship for Hindi language for Uzbek students during his State Visit.
