Lawyers Prashant Bhushan and Kapil Sibal, activist Yogendra Yadav, and All India Students’ Association chief Neha Bora were among the protesters detained at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Saturday. The demonstration was held for the second consecutive day, demanding action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

On Saturday, lawyer Prashant Bhushan, activist Yogendra Yadav, and All India Students’ Association chief Neha Bora were among those detained at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar during a protest to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. This is the second consecutive day that demonstrations were held at Jantar Mantar demanding action against Kumar.

The protesters have raised concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission and its handling of the special intensive revision of electoral rolls. On Friday, nearly 700 protesters, including Atishi and Saurabh Bharadwaj from the Aam Aadmi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Manoj Kumar Jha, and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal were detained from Jantar Mantar. All persons detained were reportedly released later in the day.

The police have said that permission has not been granted for any demonstration and that orders prohibiting a gathering of five or more persons under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure remain in force in the New Delhi district. The authorities had on Friday also suspended internet services in areas around Jantar Mantar, while the main protest area was barricaded. Further, they closed the entry and exit at 12 Delhi Metro stations, including Lok Kalyan Marg near the prime minister’s residence, Rajiv Chowk in Connaught Place, and Patel Chowk and Janpath near the protest site.
