India's Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, has called for the development of top-end technologies, strengthening Research & Development (R&D), and building resilient supply chains to reduce import dependence in the defence sector.
On October 26, 2026, Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh addressed the fifth edition of SWAVLAMBAN, an Indian Navy’s initiative. He highlighted the need for Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) in the defence sector, emphasizing Aatmanirbharta 2.0. This focus is on advanced technologies and Research & Development (R&D).
Mr. Singh proposed that the defence sector should strive to develop indigenous technologies to reduce dependence on imports. He specifically mentioned the need for niche technologies in areas such as autonomous maritime platforms, quantum and AI in war-fighting, persistent surveillance, resilient navigation, advanced communications, and counter-drone technologies.
To achieve this goal, Mr. Singh emphasized the importance of strengthening R&D in the defence sector. He also highlighted the need to build resilient domestic supply chains.
The event included a technology exhibition where start-ups/MSMEs engaged with naval users showcased their progress on operational capability development.
