More than 99.3 lakh voters have been deleted from the final voter list of Karnataka following a special intensive revision. The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Union government seeking its response to a petition challenging the Digital Personal Data Protection Act.
The special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Karnataka has resulted in the deletion of more than 99.3 lakh voters from the final voter list, reducing the number of voters from an initial 5.5 crore to 4.5 crore. In the final stage of this exercise, over 8.6 lakh names were reinstated to the draft list.
The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Union government seeking its response to a petition challenging the Digital Personal Data Protection Act and its rules. This petition was filed by the Digital News Publishers Association, which represents 21 media publishers including those owned by businesspersons Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani.
The publishers argued that the provisions of the act violate journalistic freedom and threaten the full spectrum of journalistic activity carried out by journalists, ground reporters, citizens, whistleblowers, Right to Information activists, and other stakeholders. They stated that the law impermissibly restricts the fundamental right to information and freedom of speech and expression.
Persons who applied for inclusion through Form 6 after Friday, when the period for claims and objections ended, will be added through supplementary lists to be published on a quarterly basis.
