Delhi Railways cancels trains at two major stations, police closes entry/exit gates at 57 metro stations ahead of protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Protesters raise concerns over decisions related to the special intensive revision.
The Indian Railways has cancelled all mail and express trains scheduled to arrive at New Delhi Railway Station and Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station between 4 am and 2 pm on Saturday. This decision was taken due to anticipated road traffic congestion around the stations.
The cancellations also apply to trains scheduled to depart from their originating stations after 2 pm on Friday. The Delhi Police has asked the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to close the entry and exit gates at 57 metro stations from 9 pm on Friday until the 'situation normalises' on Saturday. These stations include Lok Kalyan Marg, near the prime minister’s residence, and Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk and Janpath, all near the protest site.
The police have also proposed reducing train frequency at these stations, citing the 'likelihood of large and unruly crowds'. However, the Delhi Metro has not yet confirmed whether it will implement the request.
The protesters have raised concerns after an investigation by The Indian Express showed that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had formally objected 14 times in 10 months to decisions by the poll panel related to the special intensive revision. According to the investigation, Sandhu and Joshi had reportedly objected to changes to Form 6, appeals against the inclusion of voters in West Bengal and the handling of voter data in Goa, among other matters. Form 6 is used to register new voters.
