At the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has expressed strong support for India's claim to a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, advocating for broader representation of Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
During his address at the UN General Assembly in New York, Mr. Lavrov expressed Russia's stance on global governance reform by strongly backing India’s and Brazil’s candidatures for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council. This endorsement aligns with broader BRICS declarations that advocate for the Global South. The Russian Foreign Minister emphasized that UN Security Council reform cannot involve additional seats being allocated to Western countries, particularly Germany and Japan, which he characterized as increasingly pursuing militarism and revanchism.
In his speech, Mr. Lavrov underscored Russia’s official policy on global governance reform by advocating for more seat allocation to the Global South. The UN Security Council currently comprises 15 members, with five permanent members holding veto powers: China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US, in addition to ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms.
