India's largest public sector lender, State Bank of India (SBI), has notified affected customers and initiated an investigation after a suspected data breach.
The State Bank of India (SBI) has assured its customers that their account balances and funds remain safe following a suspected cyber incident. On Tuesday, the bank issued a statement confirming that it has individually informed those customers whose personal data was identified in the incident. SBI advised customers to follow safe digital banking practices and stay vigilant against suspicious calls, messages, and emails.
The suspected data breach occurred after SBI received alerts from its Threat Intelligence Service Provider, the Defence Cyber Agency, and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) on 16th of this month about potential customer data exposure on the dark web. A preliminary analysis of approximately three lakh 75 thousand records revealed 3,897 customer records containing personally identifiable information such as names, mobile numbers, email addresses, dates of birth, and residential addresses.
The bank has activated its cyber incident response and containment measures and appointed an independent cybersecurity agency empanelled by CERT-In to assess the incident and determine the nature and extent of the suspected data exposure. SBI clarified that the incident had no significant impact on its business operations, financial performance, or continuity. Its core banking services continue to function normally without disruption.
