The Schaeffler India Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Harsha Gopal Kadam, was arrested on Monday by the Talegaon MIDC Police Station following a factory accident that occurred at Schaeffler India's Talegaon facility in Pune on June 9. The incident resulted in the death of two workers and affected three others due to a sudden and intense carbon dioxide gas leak during a scheduled cylinder replacement. According to The Indian Express, the police had registered a case in July against six persons, including company officials and contractors involved in maintaining the factory's fire-suppression system. Kadam was taken into custody under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita as he is considered the factory’s ‘occupier’ under the 1948 Factories Act due to his position as the CEO and managing director, making him responsible for overseeing the factory's operations. The first information report had alleged that the fire-suppression system at the factory had no emergency exit, insufficient ventilation in the basement where the incident occurred, lack of trained staff and experts, inadequate personal protective equipment for workers, and no rescue team was deployed at the site. It is important to note that Schaeffler India manufactures automotive and industrial components, including bearings and precision machinery parts, making it a significant player in the industry.
