Protests enter third day at Indian Institute of Information Technology in Ranchi over the death of a first-year student due to alleged negligence by the institute in providing timely medical assistance.
The protests at IIIT Ranchi, a renowned technical institution, entered their third day on Monday. The demonstrations were sparked by the death of a first-year student, Adity Kumar, who hailed from Bihar's Bhagalpur district.
According to students who spoke to Scroll, Kumar was found unconscious and hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room on Saturday. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
Students allege that the institute failed to respond promptly, which could have potentially saved Kumar's life. On Sunday morning, around 10.30 am, students gathered on a road near the hostel, demanding the resignation of the director.
However, the police intervened and asked the protesters to disperse about two hours later. Ranchi (Sadar) Deputy Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Besra visited the institute and stated that a probe was underway to ascertain the reason behind Kumar's suicide. He also mentioned that the body has been sent for autopsy, and preliminary investigations suggest that the incident may be related to examination-related issues.
The students, however, are adamant about their demand for the director's resignation, citing inadequate emergency response as a significant factor in Kumar's death.
