The Supreme Court-appointed enquiry committee launched a portal on Saturday for affected individuals to submit complaints related to alleged police excesses during the July protests. The portal allows for anonymous submissions and prioritizes complaints about pellet gun usage, targeted violence against women protesters, excessive force, and destruction of property.
A Supreme Court-appointed enquiry committee investigating alleged police excesses during youth protests in July and violence against security forces has launched a portal on Saturday for affected individuals to submit their complaints. The committee stated that priority would be given to complaints concerning the use of pellet guns, targeted violence and harassment of women protesters, excessive use of force, and destruction of property by either side. This portal aims to protect vulnerable witnesses and keep identities confidential if desired.
Established on August 20, the five-member enquiry committee, headed by Justice R Subhash Reddy, was formed in response to petitions alleging excessive force against protesters marching towards Parliament in Delhi on July 20. The youth protests began on June 6, with demonstrations at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union education minister at the time. During this protest, several demonstrators were injured after security personnel used lathis, tear gas, and pellet guns to disperse the crowd.
The committee will assess medical and other assistance provided to those affected by alleged police abuse, including compensation, and determine if it was adequate. It will also consider injuries sustained by police personnel while on duty and the 'mental and emotional trauma' experienced by their family members.
The portal allows users to submit information under four categories: affected persons, witnesses wishing to file complaints, anonymous information, and suggestions for the committee. Each section contains a set of questions and allows users to upload supporting material, including complaints, photographs, and videos.
