Journalist Tarun Tejpal surrendered before a Goa court on September 22, as per the Supreme Court's order, to serve his 10-year sentence for raping and sexually harassing a junior colleague in 2013. Seventeen of the 20 Trinamool Congress MPs who merged with the Tripura-based Nationalist Citizens Party of India in June have announced their intention to join the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Journalist Tarun Tejpal, who was convicted by the Goa bench of the Bombay High Court on August 6 for raping and sexually harassing a junior colleague in 2013, surrendered before a Goa court on September 22 as per the Supreme Court's deadline. His 10-year sentence was overturned by the same court in 2021. On August 20, Tejpal moved the Supreme Court challenging the High Court’s decision. A bench of Justice Alok Aradhe had on August 25 directed Tejpal to surrender to the authorities within two weeks. The court agreed to list Tejpal’s appeal, provided he submits his surrender certificate by September 22.

In another development, seventeen of the 20 Trinamool Congress MPs who had merged with the Tripura-based Nationalist Citizens Party of India in June will join the Bharatiya Janata Party. Rebel TMC leader Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia said that since more than two-thirds of the 20 members will be moving, the anti-defection law will not apply to them.

In a separate case, the Central Bureau of Investigation has named former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and his son Aaditya in the first information report filed in the death of Disha Salian, the former manager of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Other individuals named include actors Dino Morea and Rhea Chakraborty, ex-Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh and suspended police officer Sachin Vaze.
