In separate incidents, two men accused of criminal offenses were killed in alleged gunfights with the police in BJP-ruled West Bengal. One incident occurred in Murshidabad district and another in Gaighata, North 24 Parganas.
According to reports by Hindustan Times, Samiul Sheikh, the main accused in the murder of BJP worker Sujit Mondal, was shot dead in Murshidabad district while allegedly attempting to escape custody. The police had arrested Sheikh and two other individuals after Mondal went missing on August 28, and parts of his body were later recovered from a canal. On Tuesday, a team of the Criminal Investigation Department took Sheikh to the Old Dak Bungalow area in Samserganj to reconstruct the crime scene. During their return, Sheikh is said to have attempted to escape, snatched a firearm from a police officer, and opened fire at the team. Injured in retaliatory fire, Sheikh was taken to a hospital where he later died. This incident was followed by another gunfight shortly before midnight on Monday in Gaighata, North 24 Parganas, where Prahlad Das, accused of raping and murdering a Class 11 student, was killed after allegedly seizing a firearm from the police and firing.
In a similar incident in July, a man accused of rape and murder of a minor in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas district was killed in an alleged gunfight with the police.
