The Union Finance Minister discusses the importance of public capital acting as a catalyst for private investment, building investor confidence and maintaining stability in attracting private capital.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has emphasized that public capital should serve as a catalyst for private investment rather than a substitute. Addressing a seminar in Jaipur on the role of the New Development Bank (NDB) in mobilizing private capital within BRICS member countries, Sitharaman highlighted that these economies are significant contributors to global growth but face challenges in attracting private investments. To mitigate this issue, she stressed the importance of ensuring capital availability, building investor confidence, maintaining stability, and providing a predictable, long-term policy framework. The Finance Minister also underscored the role of multilateral development banks in reducing investment risks, making projects financially viable, and bolstering investor confidence to encourage larger-scale private capital mobilization. In reference to India's experience, Sitharaman pointed out the government's efforts in strengthening the country's infrastructure through sustained public capital expenditure and structural reforms. NDB President Dilma Rousseff and Economic Affairs Secretary Anuradha Thakur also addressed the seminar, with Thakur emphasizing the need for increased private capital participation in the current economic climate. The seminar is being held as part of the BRICS Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors’ meeting in Jaipur under India's BRICS Chairship 2026, aiming to strengthen cooperation on global economic and financial issues.
