The World Bank has revised its estimate of India's GDP growth in the current fiscal year, raising it from 6.6% to 7.1%. The upgrade is based on a strong performance in the first quarter, with private consumption and investment as primary drivers.

According to the World Bank, the economy of India has demonstrated robust growth during the initial quarter of the financial year 2022-23 (FY27), resulting in an expansion of 7.8%. This positive trend has prompted a revision of the earlier forecast for GDP growth from 6.6% to 7.1%, as reported in April.

Private consumption and investment are identified as key contributors to this upswing, expected to continue driving growth throughout the fiscal year. In addition, favorable financial conditions and strong public investment are anticipated to offer further support.

Exports have also shown better performance than initially projected and are forecasted to significantly contribute to the growth outlook, despite potential constraints from global trade and geopolitical uncertainties that may influence private investment.

On the supply side, industrial activity has surpassed expectations, with significant gains in infrastructure, construction goods, and electricity generation. However, a deficit of rainfall during the southwest monsoon season may adversely impact agricultural output and rural demand to some extent.

The services sector continues to exhibit elevated growth rates despite a slowdown from its previous peak.
