The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has suspended the license of Surya Food and Agro Limited, a manufacturer of Priyagold biscuits, due to the use of cattle-feed bran as a raw material. The regulator also initiated legal proceedings against the company for multiple food safety violations.
In addition to suspending the license of Surya Food and Agro Limited, the FSSAI has also initiated prosecution proceedings against the company for several food safety violations relating to plant hygiene, pest control, raw material storage and segregation, personnel hygiene, premises maintenance, and the handling of intermediate formulations. These violations were discovered during an inspection where bran meant for cattle feed and not intended for human consumption was found to be used as a source of fibre.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) also initiated prosecution proceedings against Dodla Dairy Limited and UEIR Organic Foods Private Limited. A sample of Dodla Dairy’s full-cream milk was found to contain detergent or caustic soda and did not meet the prescribed milk-fat specifications. Yellow raisins sold by UEIR Organic Foods were found to contain pesticide residues.
These actions come amid a recent crackdown by food regulators on food adulteration and misleading advertisements, as evidenced by the FSSAI's directive for the immediate prohibition of sale of a product collected from The LaLiT hotel in Delhi’s Connaught Place which was found to be unsafe and substandard.
