Over 1800 individuals were arrested in France during violent protests against increasing living costs and poor conditions in schools, with several cities experiencing arson, looting, and attacks on public buildings.
In France, a nationwide demonstration against rising living costs and deteriorating school conditions saw over 1,800 arrests of protesters who clashed with police. The unrest led to instances of violence, with masked groups setting fires, attacking public buildings such as city halls, and looting shops across various cities.
Several cities were impacted by these violent incidents. In Limoges, a 19th-century City Hall was severely damaged due to a fire that caused its roof to collapse. Similar incidents occurred in Marseille, where protesters forced their way into the lobby of City Hall, and a police station was damaged. In Lyon, a tourist office experienced a fire.
Approximately 550,000 people participated in these protests across France. Unfortunately, one individual died of a heart attack during the unrest, although further details have not been provided. Over 500 police officers, gendarmes, and firefighters sustained injuries.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu denounced the violence, stating that while peaceful protests are acceptable, arson, looting, and attacks on public buildings are not. French President Emmanuel Macron will hold an emergency meeting with top government officials today, followed by a national address this evening to discuss the escalating situation.
