Two Indian citizens, Amandeep Kaur and Kamlesh Shah, were among 28 green card holders charged with election fraud for unlawfully registering and voting in the 2024 presidential polls in California. The charges include felonies that carry a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison.
On Monday, the US Department of Justice announced the charges against the two Indian citizens. Green card holders, who are allowed to live and work permanently in the US, do not have the right to vote. Amandeep Kaur is seeking to become a US citizen. According to the department's statement, Shah fraudulently registered to vote on the day of the November 2024 presidential election before casting his ballot. Kaur fraudulently registered to vote in December 2022 and voted in the November 2024 election. Of those charged, 11 were arrested in raids across the state, but it is not clear if Kaur and Shah were among those arrested.
Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter stated that California should verify the citizenship of voters before mail-in ballots are counted. He emphasized that every illegal vote cancels out the vote of a lawful American citizen.
