Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami announces Sunday as weekly holiday for madrasas in the state, a move aimed at bringing minority-run institutions under common academic and administrative standards.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced on Wednesday that Sunday will replace Friday as the weekly holiday for madrasas recognised as schools in the state. This decision, reported by The Indian Express, comes as part of a broader restructuring of minority education in Uttarakhand.
In many parts of the Islamic world, a madrasa refers to an institution that imparts both secular and religious education. However, in the Indian subcontinent, the term has evolved primarily to refer to Islamic seminaries. The weekly holiday in such institutions is typically on Friday, coinciding with Muslim congregational prayers. The change in Uttarakhand aims to bring minority-run educational institutions under common academic and administrative standards.
The Uttarakhand State Authority for Minority Education, established after the 2021 Uttarakhand Minority Education Act came into force on July 1, now regulates institutions run by Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, and Parsis. This move abolished the state's statutory madrasa board and brought all educational institutions under a single regulatory authority.
Dhami stated that the new rules on weekly holidays are part of a broader push towards uniformity in education. He also mentioned that Uttarakhand has already implemented a Uniform Civil Code, a common set of laws governing marriage, divorce, succession, and adoption for all citizens.
