The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, has taken cognizance of a media report that alleges two teachers forced girl students from classes IX and XI at a government school in Liwali village, Sawai Madhopur district, Rajasthan, to undergo a strip search and were beaten up. The incident is said to have occurred after one of the teachers lost Rs. 1,000. According to the report, the students were informed about the incident by their parents upon returning home, leading to a large protest by parents the next day.
The Commission has observed that if the contents of the news report are true, it raises serious issues regarding the violation of human rights of the victim students. Consequently, a notice has been issued to the Rajasthan Chief Secretary, asking for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.
