On July 21, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his anguish over the loss of lives due to the collapse of an under-construction tunnel in Namchi, Sikkim. He extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.
The Prime Minister announced that an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased, while the injured will receive Rs. 50,000. In a post on Twitter, the Prime Minister shared his sentiments: 'Anguished by the loss of lives due to the collapse of an under-construction tunnel in Namchi, Sikkim. I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families. I pray that those injured recover at the earliest.'
The statement further added that the Prime Minister's relief fund (PMNRF) would provide this financial aid.
