Indian Navy's newly commissioned INS Malvan

INS Malvan, the second Mahe-class ASW-SWC built domestically by Cochin Shipyard Limited, was commissioned on July 22, 2026. The event took place at Karwar under Air Chief Marshal AP Singh's presidence and highlighted the ship's deep historical significance and over 80 percent indigenous content.

On July 22, 2026, INS Malvan, the second of eight Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), was commissioned at Karwar. The event was presided over by Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, Chief of the Air Staff, and Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command. Senior naval officers, representatives from Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), Kochi, veterans, and distinguished guests attended the ceremony. The ship derives its name from the coastal town of Malvan in Maharashtra, a region associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's maritime heritage.

INS Malvan is also a successor to an earlier Indian Naval Minesweeper that served until 2003. The ship is the second of eight ASW-SWCs being indigenously built by CSL, Kochi, and the sixth of 16 ASW-SWCs commissioned into the Indian Navy. With over 80 percent indigenous content, it reflects the Government of India’s vision and the growing self-reliance in defence shipbuilding.

The vessel is equipped for Underwater Surveillance, Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) operations, Low Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO), and Mine Warfare. Its induction will bolster coastal defence, littoral security, and enhance Maritime Domain Awareness.

The crest of INS Malvan carries the 'Tiger's Claw', symbolizing bravery, warfare tactics, agility, and audacity. The vessel's name and emblem embody lethality, stealth, and the ability to strike swiftly.
