Cybersecurity measures against AI-driven threats

The Government of India has taken several measures to address the risks posed by AI-enabled cyber threats and strengthen incident response capabilities, as detailed by Union Minister of State Shri Jitin Prasada in Lok Sabha.

The Indian government is taking a proactive approach towards addressing the growing concerns of cyber security threats, particularly those arising from Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled cyber threats. According to the Press Information Bureau, these advanced threats can lower attack costs, accelerate weaponization, and make phishing and impersonation attacks more scalable and difficult to detect.

To counteract this, several legal, technical, and administrative policy measures have been implemented by the Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In). These include:

1. AI-driven situational awareness systems deployed for malicious domain detection.

2. AI-enabled vulnerability assessment extended to public-facing digital assets in a sandbox environment.

3. An automated cyber threat intelligence exchange platform operated for sharing tailored alerts with organizations across sectors.

4. Ten cyber security exercises and drills conducted on the theme 'Building Resilience against Frontier AI-driven Cyber Threats,' involving 1,470 participants from various sectors such as Power, Telecom, Banking, Financial Services and Insurance (BFSI), Transport, Education, Health, and Space.

5. The Certified Security Professional in Artificial Intelligence (CSPAI) program launched to equip cybersecurity professionals with the skills to secure AI systems and ensure trustworthy AI deployment in business environments. This program is ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) approved.

6. Cyber security training programs conducted in collaboration with Industry partners to upskill the cyber security workforce in government, public, and private sectors.

7. CERT-In has also collaborated with international partners, including France's National Cybersecurity Agency (ANSSI), on a joint high-level risk analysis report on AI titled ‘Building trust in AI through a cyber-risk-based approach.’

CERT-In has issued numerous advisories and guidelines regarding the latest cyber threats, vulnerabilities, and countermeasures. These documents provide recommendations for implementing AI-accelerated vulnerability protection, AI-assisted security testing, continuous monitoring, patch management, and incident response frameworks to defend against AI-driven cyber threats.

These efforts aim to ensure an open, safe, trusted, and accountable cyberspace in India by strengthening incident response capabilities and enhancing cyber resilience.
