The Pakistani Supreme Court has ordered the hospitalization of former Prime Minister Imran Khan due to health concerns, following a medical report recommending frequent meetings with family and personal physicians. The court also granted permission for his personal physician to meet him, but restricted the sharing of his medical report with the public.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court of Pakistan ordered that jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan be moved to a hospital for medical treatment. This decision comes after a longstanding demand by Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party and his family, who have been raising concerns about his health and incarceration conditions. The court has directed the authorities to take Khan to the hospital within 48 hours, where he will remain until September 16.
The order follows a medical board report submitted to the court, which recommended frequent meetings between Khan and his family to help manage his anxiety and blood pressure. The court also granted permission for Khan’s personal physician to meet him. However, it directed that his family and lawyers not share his medical report with the public.
Imran Khan was arrested in August 2023 and has been in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail since September 2023. He is facing several criminal cases, mostly linked to alleged corruption. In February, his son Kasim stated that Khan had lost most of the vision in his right eye, with only 15% eyesight remaining.
On Tuesday, the bench was hearing cases related to Khan allegedly not being allowed to meet his sisters and personal physicians, as well as about his medical record. The court also opposed the government’s attorney general who said that no notice had been issued to the government and that Khan could not be shifted to hospital immediately.
Imran Khan formed the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party in 1996 after retiring from cricket and served as the prime minister between August 2018 and April 2022. His government collapsed due to deteriorating relations with the Pakistani military leadership.
In January 2025, a court sentenced Khan to 14 years of imprisonment and his wife Bushra Bibi to seven years after finding them guilty in a corruption case. Amnesty International has urged the Pakistani authorities to 'immediately restore' Khan’s access to his family and legal counsel in line with international human rights law.
