The Supreme Court has directed the Central Government to consider whether the retail sale of acid should be restricted or banned, and has also instructed state and Union Territory governments to develop rehabilitation measures for victims of acid attacks within six weeks.

In a recent development, the Supreme Court has called upon the Central Government to examine the possibility of implementing stricter regulations or an outright ban on the retail sale of acid. This action follows concerns over its easy availability despite guidelines issued in 2013 aimed at controlling such sales. Alongside this, state and Union Territory governments have been ordered by the court to formulate rehabilitation measures for victims of acid attacks within six weeks. The Supreme Court also suggested that the Union government should consider drafting a model rehabilitation scheme and offering necessary aid to states for its successful implementation.

The proposed rehabilitation measures are intended to encompass various aspects, including compensation, medical assistance, rehabilitation, and free education up to higher levels for victims of acid attacks.
