Delhi Police detains Swatantra Bharadwaj for alleged assault on Nishu Aazad's father; CJP demands attempt to murder charges and invokes Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act.
The Delhi Police has taken into custody Swatantra Bharadwaj, a Hindutva influencer, following allegations of assault on Sanjay Kumar, the father of student activist Nishu Aazad during protests at Jantar Mantar. This incident took place on July 23, as reported by PTI. The controversy surrounding the case escalated with the surfacing of a purported video online that showed Bharadwaj claiming help from Delhi minister Kapil Mishra prevented his arrest over the assault. The video led to public outcry. Members of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) staged a protest outside the Parliament Street police station on Friday, demanding charges under attempt to murder and provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act be added to the case. Co-convenor of CJP, Saurav Das, stated that the additional deputy commissioner of police had given this assurance. Bharadwaj maintains he acted in self-defense and did not inflict major injuries on Kumar.
