The Delhi Development Authority has implemented new safety measures, including restricting entry to its parks after sunset, following the alleged gang rape of a teenage girl.
In response to a recent incident where a 17-year-old girl was allegedly gang raped by three men posing as police personnel in a park near Kalkaji temple, the Delhi Development Authority has taken steps to enhance safety within its green spaces. According to PTI, the authority has restricted entry to parks after sunset as part of these new measures.
On Monday night, the girl and her 17-year-old male friend were accosted by the accused at Astha Kunj Park, maintained by the Delhi Development Authority. Joint Commissioner of Police (Southern Range) Vijay Kumar stated that the accused used 'legal terminology' to intimidate the two, claiming they had committed a crime and could face charges. The trio then separated the girl and sexually assaulted her while restraining the boy.
A first information case has been registered under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. Three accused – Asif (31), Hemanth (31) and Mukesh (24), his brother – have been arrested in connection with this case.
The incident has raised concerns over safety arrangements in public parks in Delhi. Following a meeting with Delhi Lieutenant General Taranjit Singh Sandhu, development authority officials plan to conduct a safety audit of all parks within a week. Additionally, increased security during evening hours, restricted access to parks after sunset and surveillance cameras at entry gates have been implemented.
