Several protesters led by the All India Students' Association were detained by Delhi Police during a demonstration at Jantar Mantar. Four women wrestlers have moved a court challenging the acquittal of former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in a sexual harassment case.
In a significant development, leaders of a student-led protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar demanding the arrest of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar were detained by the police. The protesters had alleged irregularities in the conduct of elections after The Indian Express on Wednesday reported that two election commissioners had objected to the special intensive revision of the electoral rolls.
Among those detained were Neha Bora, the All India Students’ Association chief; Dipankar Bhattacharya, General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist); Yogendra Yadav and Anjali Bharadwaj, activists. The Delhi Police had denied permission for the protest and ‘brutally detained’ the leaders, according to the All India Students’ Association.
Separately, four women wrestlers have moved a Delhi court against the acquittal of former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in a sexual harassment case. They contended that the August 3 order applied the ‘ideal victim standard’ to the wrestlers who had accused the former Bharatiya Janata Party MP of sexual harassment and intimidation.
The wrestlers added that the order was based on ‘archaic and stereotypical assumptions’ about the ‘expected’ behavior of victims of sexual assault and harassment. It also lacked a ‘fair, evidence-based assessment’ that took into account the circumstances of the victims, according to the wrestlers.
