The Gauhati High Court has ordered the Assam government to pay compensation to two Bengali-origin Muslim women who were forced into Bangladesh, marking a precedent in such cases.
The Gauhati High Court has directed the Assam government to pay Rs 2 lakh in compensation to each of Jahanara Begum and Mumtaz Begum, who were declared foreigners by a foreigners tribunal in 2019 and subsequently deported to Bangladesh. This marks the first instance where the court has imposed costs on the state for such actions.
Jahanara was deported in June, while Mumtaz's case is ongoing. The High Court passed a similar order for Mumtaz Begum on Monday.
In another development, the Bombay High Court refused to quash a criminal defamation case against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The case stems from comments Gandhi made in 2018, in which he referred to Modi as ‘choron ke sardar’ or ‘leader of thieves’.
The Supreme Court has also asked the Uttar Pradesh government whether detentions under the National Security Act can be made based on confessions made by persons while in police custody. The question arises in a case challenging the preventive detention of Mulla Afroz, accused of organising the Sambhal violence in 2024.
