At least six students were injured after a clash between them and members of an RSS-affiliated group during an event at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute in Kolkata.
On Sunday, at least six students at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute in Kolkata were injured after a confrontation with members of the Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat, a consumer group that had rented the institute's main theatre for an event. According to Maktoob Media, the students' union claimed that they were not informed about the event beforehand.
Poorvi Bondre, a member of the union, told Deutsche Welle that students confronted participants of the event after learning that the organisers were affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and using the event to 'promote its agenda' on campus. Bondre alleged that the attackers called them 'anti-nationals' and 'Naxals', and attacked them with knives.
Some students were also chased, and their clothes torn and phones forcibly taken, as per the union's statement.
A large group was reportedly attempting to attack students inside the campus, and stones were thrown at students from outside the gate while police were present. The union added that this was not the first instance of such disruption on campus by RSS-affiliated groups.
The Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat has disputed the union’s account, alleging that some of its members were attacked during the event. It also claimed that students tore their posters and disrupted the programme.
