Two women journalists, Shaheen Khan and Nafisa Khan, have accused the Delhi Police of assaulting them at Saket Police Station. The alleged assault became more violent when the police discovered that the two women are Muslims.
A journalist has alleged that she and her colleague were detained by the Delhi Police from an event attended by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and assaulted at Saket Police Station. The Delhi Police has not yet commented on the allegations. According to Shaheen Khan's video posted by 4PM News Network, when she attempted to ask Gupta a question during the event at a private hospital , the police 'caught hold of her…and took her to the police station while beating her'. The channel further added that 'when police personnel asked her name and heard ‘Khan,’ the assault intensified.'
In the video, Shaheen Khan can be seen at a police station alleging that she and her colleague, Nafisa Khan, were assaulted and 'subjected to mental harassment'. She also showed injury marks on Nafisa Khan’s body. Several Congress and Aam Aadmi Party leaders expressed concern over the alleged assault and criticised the police’s conduct.
The AAP’s Delhi unit chief Saurabh Bharadwaj remarked that the police had ‘brutally beaten ’ two women reporters for asking questions to the chief minister. ‘Shame on woman CM Rekha Gupta,’ he said in a social media post. Another AAP leader, Somnath Bharti , urged Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu to intervene and ensure that the officials involved face action.
Congress leader Pawan Khera said that the alleged assault was ‘utterly reprehensible’ and asked whether the city is a ‘police state’. 'Women journalists being beaten and thrashed for asking questions about the Delhi CM,' he remarked. ‘And when the police allegedly discovered that one of these journalists was Muslim, the assault intensified.’
In a joint statement, the Press Club of India, Indian Women’s Press Corps, Delhi Union of Journalists, Press Association and Kerala Union of Working Journalists called for punitive action against police officials posted at the Saket police station. The journalist bodies also urged Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar to launch a free and fair investigation into the allegations.
