A Hindutva influencer has been detained by the Delhi Police for allegedly assaulting the father of a student activist during protests at Jantar Mantar. The incident sparked controversy after a video of the influencer claiming that a call from Delhi minister Kapil Mishra helped him avoid arrest went viral.
The Delhi Police has detained Swatantra Bharadwaj, a Hindutva influencer, for his alleged involvement in assaulting Sanjay Kumar, the father of student activist Nishu Aazad, during demonstrations at Jantar Mantar on July 23. The protests were against alleged irregularities in competitive examinations.
According to PTI, this development comes after a purported video of Bharadwaj surfaced online, claiming that he was not arrested despite having 'cracked the skull' of Kumar. This sparked a row and led to a protest by members of the Cockroach Janta Party outside the Parliament Street police station.
Recently, a purported video of Bharadwaj, widely shared online, showed him claiming that he was not jailed despite having acted in self-defense. He stated that he could have been lynched by the mob or killed if he had not defended himself. However, according to ANI, Bharadwaj also claimed that he did not inflict major injuries on Kumar as per his medical report from Delhi Police.
Following the controversy over the video, members of the Cockroach Janta Party staged a protest on Friday outside the Parliament Street police station, demanding that charges under provisions relating to attempt to murder be added to the first information report registered in the case. CJP co-convenor Saurav Das stated that the additional deputy commissioner of police had promised to adding charges of attempt to murder and provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Prevention of Atrocities Act to the case, as reported by PTI.
