The Delhi Police has denotified Jantar Mantar as a protest site based on recommendations from the Union home ministry. This decision comes amid ongoing protests in the national capital against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
On October 11, Delhi Commissioner of Police Anurag Kumar issued an order to denotify Jantar Mantar as a protest site based on recommendations from a committee constituted by the Union home ministry. This decision follows protests at Jantar Mantar against alleged exam irregularities in June and July, which led to Bharatiya Janata Party leader Dharmendra Pradhan resigning as the Union education minister.
As alternatives, the police designated the Ramlila Ground in central Delhi, Burari Ground in northern Delhi, and CBD Ground in eastern Delhi’s Shahdara area as venues for protest. The order was issued amid ongoing protests in the national capital by the Cockroach Janta Party political campaign, Opposition parties, and student groups demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh expressed his concern over this move, stating that 'democracy no longer matters' to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. He described them as a 'poisonous pair' struggling with the protests against Kumar.
On Monday, Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke said that the government did not have a problem with the protest site, 'but with the protest'. The political campaign’s convenor Saurav Das called the move 'unacceptable' and questioned why Modi was 'scared' of Jantar Mantar.
Protests against Kumar have been held in Delhi and other parts of the country since October 2.
