The midterm elections held on Tuesday saw the Democratic Party make significant gains, taking control of the Senate and leading in the House of Representatives. The party won 194 seats, while the Republicans had 115, with several seats still to be called.
The Democratic Party has made a notable shift in the United States midterm elections, securing control of the Senate from the Republican Party. As of 11 am Indian time on Wednesday, the Democrats have won in 52 seats, while the Republicans have won in 40 seats according to the Associated Press (AP). One seat remains uncalled.
Before the elections, the Republicans held a 53:47 majority in the 100-member Senate. In the 435-member Lower House of Congress, they had a slim 219:214 advantage. However, as of the same time on Wednesday, the Democrats have won 194 seats and the Republicans 115. The remaining 126 seats have not been called.
The Democrats' win in the Senate signifies a change of leadership in this chamber for the first time since 2014. In the House of Representatives, the party is currently leading, but the final results are yet to be announced.
These election results could significantly impact the remaining two years of President Donald Trump's tenure, as a Democratic-controlled Congress is expected to lead to greater scrutiny of his administration.
