US President Donald Trump acknowledges heavy impact of Iran conflict on fuel prices during midterms, while Democrats take control of House and Senate. Global energy markets respond immediately.
US President Donald Trump acknowledged that the eight-month-old war in Iran had heavily impacted the midterm elections. Speaking to reporters at the White House after the election results, Trump conceded that voters were deeply frustrated by surging fuel prices linked to the conflict.
In a notable development, Democrats swept the polls, taking control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Despite the severe political fallout for the Republican Party, Trump firmly defended his foreign policy agenda, asserting that the military campaign was an absolute necessity. He emphasised that preventing Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon remains his long-term priority.
Following the Democratic sweep, US Vice-President JD Vance distanced himself from the administration’s military strategy, posting online that “the reason we lost is the war”. Meanwhile, Mike Johnson of Louisiana announced that he would not seek re-election as House Republican leader, setting the stage for an intense intra-party leadership battle.
Global energy markets responded immediately to the Democratic sweep. Brent crude oil futures plunged by more than 8 per cent to below 100 dollars a barrel, their lowest level in nearly a month.
