A school van driver was arrested in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, on August 25 after driving through a waterlogged railway underpass. The incident resulted in the removal of barricades placed as a safety measure by the police. A legal case has been registered against the school operator for violating safety standards.

On August 25, heavy rainfall caused waterlogging at the railway underbridge in the Civil Lines area of Dewas. As a safety measure, police had placed barricades and restricted movement through the underpass. However, the driver of a Magic vehicle belonging to City Convent School removed these barricades and drove the vehicle into the water. When the van became stranded in the water, the driver abandoned the children at the spot and fled.

Local residents, Dial-112 personnel, and Civil Lines police acted swiftly to evacuate all the schoolchildren with the help of ropes. Following the incident, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav made it clear that the safety of students is the government’s highest priority and that no negligence in this regard will be tolerated.

In accordance with Chief Minister Dr. Yadav’s instructions, Dewas Collector Shri Rituraj Singh and Superintendent of Police Shri Puneet Gehlot ensured immediate action. At Civil Lines Police Station, Dewas, a case (FIR No. 465/2026) was registered against the accused driver under Sections 281 and 285 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and various provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. The driver was arrested, and the vehicle was seized.

In addition, a separate case (FIR No. 467/2026) has been registered against the school operator under Section 223 of the BNS for violating safety standards and guidelines related to character verification. The matter is under investigation.
