Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned citing student protests, referred to irregularities in the NEET-UG 2026 examination, and expressed gratitude for the Prime Minister's support.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan tendered his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi today. In a social media post, he stated that the ongoing student protests over the past ten days had caused him distress. Mr Pradhan asserted that his decision was not motivated by personal prestige but aimed to prevent anti-national forces from exploiting the situation and to avoid entangling students in legal complexities. He expressed gratitude for the Prime Minister's guidance, trust, and support throughout his tenure.
In addition, Mr Pradhan addressed the irregularities in the NEET-UG 2026 examination. He confirmed that the investigation into these matters had been handed over to the CBI, and the examination was cancelled. A fresh date for the re-examination, scheduled to be conducted in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode from next year, was announced.
Mr Pradhan emphasized a whole-of-government approach taken for the examination, involving central, state, and district administrations. He acknowledged the cooperation of students and parents in successfully conducting the examination on June 21, 2026.
