The Election Commission of India has issued directives to five states, restricting officers associated with election work who have served in their home districts for three years or more from continuing in the same district during the 2027 Assembly elections.
In a letter to the Chief Secretaries and Chief Electoral Officers of Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has mandated the transfer of officers involved in election duties who are currently posted in their home districts or have served there for three years or more before the 2027 Assembly elections. The directive was issued to ensure that no officer directly linked to elections is permitted to continue in their current district of posting.
The cut-off date for calculating the three-year tenure varies across the states: it is set as 31st March 2027 for Goa, Manipur, Punjab, and Uttarakhand, while for Uttar Pradesh, it is 31st May 2027.
The ECI also prohibited district election officers, returning officers, assistant returning officers, and police inspectors, sub-inspectors or officers of higher ranks from being posted back to, or allowed to continue in, the Assembly constituency or district where they served during the previous Assembly election or any subsequent by-election.
