This article discusses the implementation of digital systems, AI-powered robots, and electric vehicles in various cities for improved urban sanitation. Specifically, it covers the introduction of a digital Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) system in Raipur, the deployment of an AI-powered canal-cleaning robot named G-SPIDER in Thiruvananthapuram, and the integration of electric vehicles into door-to-door waste collection in Guntur, Chennai, and Indore.
The Swachh Bharat Mission, launched on October 2, 2014, has embraced a new generation of technology to improve urban sanitation. In Raipur, the introduction of a digital Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) system allows residents to request desludging services online, reducing wait times and improving efficiency.
The Raipur Municipal Corporation introduced this digital FSM prototype based on the UPYOG platform.
In Thiruvananthapuram, an AI-powered canal-cleaning robot named G-SPIDER has been deployed to clean difficult spaces where human entry poses significant safety risks. The robot uses machine vision and sensor intelligence to adapt to different waste types, flow conditions, and structural challenges in real time.
Across cities like Guntur, Chennai, and Indore, electric vehicles are being integrated into door-to-door waste collection, combining cleaner mobility with smarter waste management. For example, more than 1,200 electric vehicles have been deployed in Guntur city for this purpose.
