Four men, claimed to be members of the Hindu Rakshak Dal, were arrested by the Delhi Police following a viral video that showed them assaulting protesters. The incident took place during a demonstration called by the Cockroach Janta Party and student groups affiliated with Left parties.
Four men, accused of assaulting protesters in Delhi, have been arrested as per reports from The Hindu. The individuals purportedly claimed to be members of the Hindutva organisation Hindu Rakshak Dal. A widely shared video of the incident shows a man beating a male protester while a woman tries to stop him; it also shows another man hitting a woman and pushing her to the ground, with a police officer present at the scene.
The Delhi Police took suo moto cognisance of the incident based on the video. The persons accused in the case have been identified as Raman Saini (50), Vivekanand alias Vivek (32), Kapil Kumar (27) and Ravinder Singh alias Govind Hindu (35).
The incident took place on a stretch of DDU Marg under the jurisdiction of Kamla Market Police Station, as reported by The Indian Express.
The Cockroach Janta Party described the incident as ‘deeply disturbing’ and alleged that the men were goons of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its parent organisation, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. They accused the Delhi Police of helping the goons instead of protecting the protesters.
Ahead of the demonstration on Saturday, the police imposed several restrictions to deter protesters from gathering in the national capital. Among the thousands detained were former Chief Ministers Mamata Banerjee, Arvind Kejriwal, Pinarayi Vijayan and Manik Sarkar, as well as journalists and other Opposition leaders and protesters.
