The Government of India has successfully accomplished its aim of generating 11 crore Farmer IDs, five months ahead of the original deadline. The achievement is a significant stride towards Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision for a prosperous agricultural sector.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare has announced that India has reached its goal of creating 11 crore Farmer IDs, five months before the scheduled date of March 31, 2027. The accomplishment marks a substantial step towards realizing Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's vision of a developed India with thriving farmers.
Union Agriculture Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan revealed that the Farmer ID creation process was successfully completed by October 23, which was earlier set as the deadline established by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The achievement is the result of collective efforts from the Central government, state governments, and field-level officials.
The Digital Agriculture Mission, implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, aimed to offer farmers a unique digital identity to facilitate transparent, efficient, and timely access to various government schemes, bank credit, crop insurance, and disaster relief. By reducing paperwork and repeated verification, the Farmer ID system is intended to streamline agricultural services.
Reduced administrative burdens are expected as a result of the Farmer ID system. Farmers will no longer have to repeatedly visit government offices or banks for various schemes. The process of bank loans, Kisan Credit Card, Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, disaster relief assistance, and crop procurement at Minimum Support Price (MSP) is expected to become more straightforward.
More than 6 crore farmers have already reaped benefits under various schemes since the launch of the Digital Agriculture Mission on September 2, 2024. The Farmer ID-based service delivery system has played a crucial role in eliminating fraud and minimizing duplicate verifications. It has also improved coordination among government departments and enhanced policy formulation and monitoring, making it easier to track scheme implementation and benefit distribution.
State governments are also taking specific measures to enroll tenant farmers and actual cultivators onto the digital platform. This ensures that no eligible farmer is left out of the government’s welfare programs.
