He said that texts such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata are extraordinary repositories of knowledge, science, and values. Every character in these epics represents ideals of love, respect, sacrifice, self-respect, honor, and morality.
Governor Shri Patel urged private universities to accept the responsibility of taking the knowledge and values embedded in India’s traditions to the younger generation. He encouraged them to make students sensitive towards the poor, backward, deprived, and vulnerable sections of society and empower them to contribute effectively to realizing the vision of a developed India.
Governor Shri Patel also said that in the Guru-Shishya tradition, education was not merely about memorizing lessons but about developing character, discipline, self-reliance, and a sense of duty. He stated that the glory of the Indian knowledge tradition lies not merely in its achievements, but in the thought process that connects knowledge with the welfare of humanity and society.
Furthermore, Governor Shri Patel said education in the Indian knowledge tradition was not merely about acquiring information but understanding life and seeking truth for the welfare of humanity. He highlighted that the Upanishads reflect the spirit of inquiry inherent in our knowledge tradition, while the Vedas embody reverence for nature and the universe.
Indian philosophy carries a rich legacy of contemplation on the deeper questions of life. Charaka and Sushruta developed human health and medicine as organized fields of knowledge, and Kautilya’s Arthashastra reflects profound thinking on governance, economic policy, diplomacy, and social organization, whose relevance remains timeless.
