The Indian government has stated its commitment to ensuring energy security for its 1.4 billion citizens and pledged to take all necessary steps to protect its trade and economic interests, following the passing of a bill by the US House of Representatives that could impose tariffs on countries like India for procuring Russian crude oil.
The Indian government has affirmed its commitment to ensuring energy security for its 1.4 billion citizens. This commitment is to be upheld through diversified sourcing and in accordance with evolving market dynamics.
The External Affairs Ministry disclosed that discussions regarding this issue have taken place at high levels with various US interlocutors in recent months. The potential implications for both the bilateral relationship and the international energy market have been articulated by the Indian side. The government has made it clear its determination to take all necessary measures to protect its trade and economic interests.
The Ministry has also revealed that it will work closely with Indian trade and industry bodies to deal with the implications of these developments. The sanctions bill was previously passed by the US Senate last month. It was approved by the House of Representatives in a 262-159 vote last evening, and will become law once President Trump signs it.
The bill seeks to impose sanctions not only on Russia’s leadership and energy sector, but also on the shadow fleet of vessels that enable Moscow to evade sanctions on oil deliveries. It authorises US President to impose stiff tariffs on China, India and other countries to reduce their dependence on Russian oil and gas, as well as additional sanctions on Iran.
