S. Jaishankar is scheduled to deliver India’s national statement during the annual high-level session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 26, amid ongoing geopolitical conflicts and escalating economic pressures.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is set to address the annual high-level session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 26. During the afternoon session of the General Debate, which runs from September 22 to 28, Jaishankar will deliver India’s national statement.
The high-level session takes place against the backdrop of continuing geopolitical conflicts and growing economic pressures. The UN General Assembly's high-level week will also feature discussions on several pressing global issues. Among these are the existential threats posed by sea-level rise, pandemic prevention, preparedness and response, climate action, and the complete elimination of nuclear weapons.
Furthermore, rising food and fuel prices due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz are adding to economic pressures faced by many nations. This issue is likely to be addressed during the debates.
Simultaneously, the selection process for the next UN Secretary-General is underway. The upcoming General Assembly session will be the last high-level gathering for current Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, whose second term ends in December this year.
