Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh discussed India's nuclear energy role, its peaceful applications, and the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data centres.
In an exclusive conversation at the 'Bloomberg Economy Forum 2026', Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh reiterated that India's nuclear programme has been focused on peaceful purposes since its inception, a vision inspired by Dr. Homi Bhabha, the architect of India’s nuclear programme. He highlighted that nuclear energy would play an increasingly significant role in meeting India’s future energy requirements, including supporting Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data centres which demand reliable electricity.
The Minister emphasized India's commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear technology as it expands its capabilities to meet emerging developmental and technological needs. He also pointed out that this commitment remains central to India’s approach in pursuing 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047 and achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070.
Dr. Jitendra Singh further linked nuclear energy with the next phase of technological growth, stating that the expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data centres would require dependable sources of electricity capable of meeting their substantial and continuous energy needs. He suggested that nuclear energy would supplement India’s other energy programmes and contribute to meeting the power requirements of an increasingly technology-driven economy.
On the expanding role of Artificial Intelligence, the Minister emphasized its potential across various sectors but stressed the importance of human judgement in its application. He noted that regulations are in place, and integrity at both the individual and national level is essential to ensure responsible AI usage.
