Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav announces the National Programme on Capacity Building of Tribal Healers, with Madhya Pradesh setting a target to identify around 640 tribal healers for training.
In an effort to preserve and promote traditional medical knowledge, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has emphasized the importance of documenting indigenous practices passed down through generations within tribal communities in Madhya Pradesh. The State Government considers this knowledge vital not only for the welfare of tribal communities but also for safeguarding the state’s cultural and natural heritage.
The Chief Minister stated that over 21% of Madhya Pradesh’s population belongs to tribal communities, and preserving their forest-based way of life and traditional knowledge is a government priority. To achieve this goal, the State Government has set a target to document traditional knowledge with the support of elderly and senior knowledge holders from tribal communities.
Under the initiative, efforts are being made to directly reach traditional tribal healers and knowledge holders, including Vaidyas, Tadvis, Bhumkas, Barwas, Ojhas, Guniyas, herbal healers, bone-setters, midwives, and snake-bite treatment practitioners. Attention is given to documenting traditional knowledge and experience related to the use of natural tubers, roots, herbs, and medicinal plants for treating various ailments.
The Central Government has also taken initiatives in this direction. The Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs launched the National Programme on Capacity Building of Tribal Healers, aiming to create a cadre of 5,000 trained Master Trainers comprising traditional tribal healers from across the country.
Madhya Pradesh has set a target of identifying around 640 tribal healers from 34 districts across Indore, Jabalpur, Shahdol, Narmadapuram, Rewa, Gwalior-Chambal, Bhopal, and Ujjain divisions for specialised capacity-building and training as Master Trainers. As of the end of June 2026, the names of 101 tribal healers from Madhya Pradesh had already been forwarded to the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs for Master Trainer training.
