The number of cheetahs in Madhya Pradesh has risen to 56 following the birth of four cubs by an India-born female at Kuno National Park. This event marks an important milestone in India's ongoing cheetah conservation journey, and strengthens the state's position as a major centre for cheetah conservation.
Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav expressed immense happiness over the development, stating that life always finds its own way, making it all the more fascinating. He noted that there was a time when Madhya Pradesh had only a handful of cheetahs; today, their number has risen to 56.
The historic journey of cheetah reintroduction, launched at Kuno National Park on September 17, 2022, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has reached a new milestone. The birth of four cubs at Kuno on September 18, 2026, takes India's cheetah population from 52 to 56.
Describing the development as a historic and joyous moment for Project Cheetah, Dr. Yadav said that the birth marks an important step towards increasing the cheetah population in the country and demonstrates that Kuno’s natural environment is becoming increasingly conducive to cheetah breeding and conservation.
With the arrival of the four cubs, the number of cheetahs born in India has risen to 36. Before the birth of the four cubs, 49 cheetahs were in Kuno National Park and three in Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary. Following the birth of the four cubs, Kuno now has 53 cheetahs, taking the total number in Madhya Pradesh to 56.
The Chief Minister congratulated and extended his best wishes to all officers and personnel associated with Project Cheetah.
