The Ministry of External Affairs has refuted claims on social media that multiple leaders fell ill after attending the BRICS summit in Delhi. Some posts suggested President Cyril Ramaphosa and Chinese President Xi Jinping were among those affected.
On Thursday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) categorically denied speculations circulating on social media suggesting that several world leaders had fallen ill following their participation in the BRICS summit held in Delhi over the weekend. The MEA described these claims as 'misleading' and 'fake'.
Some posts, which had garnered over 7.7 million views by Thursday afternoon on a particular social media platform, alleged that multiple leaders had succumbed to illness after attending the summit.
The allegations regarding South African President Cyril Ramaphosa's ill health were based on his office's statement on Wednesday, stating he would not attend public events due to illness. However, the nature of Ramaphosa’s illness and whether it was linked to the BRICS summit remained unclear as the South African government did not provide further details.
In response to claims about Chinese President Xi Jinping's alleged illness, the MEA revealed that videos posted on Thursday showed Prime Minister Narendra Modi inquiring 'is it okay?' during a session on Sunday while Xi’s staff was assisting him with his audio translation device. This incident had previously been interpreted as evidence of Xi’s illness.
